About the Supplier: Northern Ghana Women's Co-Op
Shea butter is made from the nut of the African Shea tree, which grows wild in West Africa and parts of Eastern and Central Africa. The shea butter tree bears fruits when it is 10-15 years old and reached peak production at 30-50 years. At maturity, shea nut kernels contains 47 to 50 percent fat or oil which when extracted into shea butter. This shea butter is cold pressed raw, so it is full of fatty acids and vitamins A, E and F. Shea butter is used extensively in cooking and cosmetics, but historiccaly not much of that trickles down to the small farming communities in northern Ghana, where the nuts are processed into shea butter. Over 38% of the shea butter available on the market today is grade C shea butter, which is highly refined and extracted with solvents, such as hextane.
