Spice Hacks: Best Honey Substitute?

Honey is a natural sweetener produced by bees. Honey gets its flavor from the nectar derived from the flower it was extracted from. It is often used as a healthier and more natural alternative to sugar as it packs a number of health benefits.

Agave Nectar

Agave nectar is extracted from the Agave plant and offers an incredibly sweet flavor. It is a great substitute, however, it browns and cooks faster than honey or sugar. Make sure to reduce cooking temperatures with this alternative.

Brown Rice Syrup

This alternative offers a milder and more delicate flavor than honey. It is great for coffees and teas because of its subtle sweetness. Brown rice syrup is also commonly used in vegan and gluten-free desserts.

Molasses

Molasses is a byproduct from producing sugar from sugar canes and sugar beets. The best variation to use as a substitute for honey is light molasses as others may have a bitter aftertaste. Avoid blackstrap molasses.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup offers a completely different flavor however still makes a wonderful substitute for honey.  Be sure to use 100% natural maple syrup to experience the fuller flavor.

Light Corn Syrup

This alternative is widely available in many grocery stores. Additionally, light corn syrup has the same light flavor profile as honey, making it a great substitute in terms of flavor and sweetness.
