Spice Hacks: Best Coconut Oil Substitute?

Coconut oil is often used as a healthier cooking substitute for other plant-based oils. This superfood packs a dozen health benefits and nutrients in a tablespoon. It is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids which are great nutrients for healthy skin and hair. Additionally, it has great antimicrobial properties and can be used as a topical treatment for several skin conditions.

With this said, coconut oil can have a strong coconut flavor which might not be ideal for some recipes.

Coconut Oil Substitutes

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a great alternative for non-baked cooking as its flavor can be overpowering. If you are looking to add fat on salad dressings and ready-made meals, Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Virgin Olive oil are great alternatives. EVOO and virgin olive oil have a lighter and tangy flavor.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is an example of a neutral oil with a milder flavor than coconut oil. It is a great substitute especially for frying as it is a high heat oil.

Avocado Oil

Similar to sunflower oil, avocado oil has a milder and earthier flavor than coconut oil. It can also withstand high heat and is great for sauteing and deep-frying.

Grape Seed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a light substitute that offers a crisp and subtle flavor. It is perfect for salad dressings and light dishes with citrus
