Spice Hacks: Best Sesame Oil Substitute?

Sesame oil is a staple for many Chinese, Korean, and Indian dishes. Its aromatic and potent nutty flavor makes it a great ingredient to have to season soups, stir-fries, or other savory dishes.

Sesame oil is linked to a number of health benefits including lowering blood pressure, strengthening bones, and improving cardiovascular health because of its anti-inflammatory effects.

Sesame Oil Substitutes

Perilla Oil

Perilla oil matches the earthy, aromatic flavor profile of sesame oil. It is commonly used in Chinese and Indian dishes. It is best used sparingly in sautéing and dressings as excessive amounts could cause complications.

Peanut Oil

Peanut oil and other nut oils are great alternatives for sesame oil. Although they do not pack the same amount of rich flavor as sesame oil, the right amount can elevate any dish with its nutty and earthy taste.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil does not have the same flavor as sesame oil, however, it is a worthy substitute especially if you are concerned with finding healthier alternatives. Avocado oil is excellent for deep-frying, salad dressings, grilling or sautéing

Tahini

It is a popular Middle-Eastern ingredient that is made of a creamy, light sesame paste. It is an excellent substitute for sesame oil if you are looking for rich nutty flavors. Tahini can be a bit grainy or thicker in consistency however combining it with another neutral oil can help smoothen out its texture.
