How to Cook Barley

For a nutritious grain that is delicious and versatile, you can’t go wrong with barley.

After wheat, rice, and corn, barley is the most produced grain in the world. This cereal grain is a staple in many areas because it is a good source of fiber and carbohydrates. It is great dietary choice because of the numerous health benefits.

Barley is quite versatile, and it can be prepared and served in many different ways. Its texture is similar to quinoa and brown rice, making it an excellent side dish for many meals.

Ways to Enjoy Barley

  • Basic Cooked Barley

Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Feel free to season it with salt before adding barley. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 45-55 minutes. Cover the pot with a lid, but stir occasionally to avoid the foam from boiling over.

The end product should be chewy and tender. Drain the excess water and allow it to cool. After that, you are free to enjoy the cooked barley however you wish.

  • Baked Barley

Some people prefer to bake barley instead. To do this, preheat the oven to 375 degrees and place the barley in an oven-safe baking dish. Boil two cups of water, which you will then pour over the barley. Just add a bit of butter and salt for additional taste.

Cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil and leave it baking for an hour. After that, you can take it out of the oven and serve with your favorite meals.

  • Barley Salad

To make a barley salad, you need to have the basic cooked barley in a bowl. Add in chopped onion, feta cheese, and tomatoes and mix well. Mix the dressing on a separate bowl by combining salt, pepper, oil, and red wine vinegar.

Afterward, pour the dressing over the salad and make sure it coats everything evenly. Barley salad is pretty easy to make, and the other ingredients give it a great taste and texture.
