Dal Fry

Dal fry, or dal tadka, with Indian spices, garlic, ginger, chili and  is a perfect one pot winter comfort dish.  


1 cup dal
2 1/2 cups water
Kosher salt, to taste
1 teaspoon RawSpiceBar's turmeric powder 
3 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida powder (optional)
1 red or green chili, minced
1 inch ginger, minced
2 tablespoons cilantro, minced
Kosher salt, to taste
2 tsp RawSpiceBar's chaat masala (optional)
1 tbsp RawSpiceBar's garam masala
16 oz can whole tomatoes, strained


1. Wash and soak dal in about 3 cups of water, at least one hour. Drain.
2. Add dal and 2 1/2 cups water into a pressure cooker with salt and turmeric. 

3. Cook on medium-high heat. Once steaming, turn heat to medium and cook another 5-7 minutes.
4. In a large skillet, add ghee or oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and salt and saute until translucent, 5-7 minutes. Add asafoetida, garam masala, chili, ginger and garlic and cook, 2-3 minutes. 
5. Add tomatoes and cook, another 5-6 minutes. Add cilantro, chaat masala and cook, another 1-2 minutes. 
6. Add dal and cook, another 3-4 minutes. Serve with naan or rice and enjoy!
