Pushing palates, amping flavors

 The global spice blends we know today have been perfected over thousands of years and influenced by hundreds of cultures.  But each blend can have tons of variations, varying from region to region and family to family.  At RawSpiceBar, we love creating traditional blends, but also like to push palates.  From amping up the black peppercorns in our black peppercorn chai or adding fennel & star anise for a unique flavor in our Unpumpkin Spice Blend, altering blends from the "norm" is our favorite way to help you identify the flavors you love to cook with.  Check out a few of our absolute favorites:

 

GROUND RED CHILES TACO SEASONING

Freshly ground and toasted ancho, guajillo, New Mexico and arbol chiles blend with the rich, woodsy flavors of cumin, coriander and paprika to make any bowl of chili a superstar. This salt-free blend of freshly Ground Red Chiles taco seasoning & fajita seasoning is awesome for carnivores and vegetarians alike- perfect as taco seasoning, fajita seasoning, posole, stews, soups, and bean-based dishes!

SZECHUAN FIVE SPICE

A core pantry staple in Chinese homes, this blend of fennel, Szechuan peppercorns, star anise and cinnamon is also widely used in other Asian and Arabic homes. Complements rich and fatty meats like duck, pork and beef, this blends claim to fame is its appearance in Chinese barbecued pork dishes. Try in veggie stir fries, roasted carrots or muffins for a unique flavor angle.

SZECHUAN FIVE SPICE

INDO-FRENCH VADOUVAN

A French take on an Indian masala, this blend is bursting with the aromatic and vibrant flavors of both cuisines. Shallots, onion and garlic combine with fenugreek, fennel, curry leaves and other spices to bring a warm, full and rounded flavor. Use as a base for a curry but works really well as a "tempering" spice- add towards the end of cooking to bring balance and warmth. Particularly yummy in birianis and dahls!

GRAINS OF PARADISE APPLE PIE SPICE

This is not your Grandma's apple pie spice! This freshly ground spice blend includes grains of paradise (a West African pepper), star anise and green cardamom for a unique twist on a classic spice blend. Try in breads, muffins, french toast or roasted yams or carrot and squash soup.

UNPUMPKIN PIE SPICE

This fall inspired pumpkin pie spice blend is unlike all those other traditional blends- with freshly ground cinnamon, allspice and star anise as the star ingredients. Sprinkle this pumpkin spice over squash and roast, stir into yogurt or ice cream or brew into your morning coffee or add to cookies, breads, cakes, pies or other baked goods.
